Well, it was a very exciting final. I finally had figured out how to get the voice on my computer which is so much nice than just waiting to see the 500 meter results pop up pn the screen. For the first 1500 meters, all 6 boats were within 3 seconds of each other. To give you an idea, 3 seconds is one length of a boat, so, all boats were basically lined up across the race course. It was in the last 500 meters that 4 boats started to pull away. Matt hung in with Germany, Poland & China as they pulled away from 5th and 6th place. Finally, Matt finished 4th only 0.18 seconds from third place and only 2.16 seconds from 1st place. In the last 500 meters, Germany came from 4th place to win with a time of 7:03.07. It was so close..... USRowing has a nice paragraph about Matt in their press release, http://www.usrowing.org/News_Media/PressReleases/detail.aspx?nws_lKey=741.
USRowing mentioned that is was 1991 when USA last had someone earn 4th in the Men's Junior 1x at the World Rowing Junior Championships. For all countries, the Men's and Women's 1x is the premier event and their fastest rower is in that race. There were 38 countries that participated in the Men's Junior 1x, the largest field of any event. It is quite an honor to have placed that well in the 1x. Matt is only 17 and will be age eligible to qualify for this event next year should he be able to continue with his training.
Congratulations to Matt and Laci on a job well done.
A special thank you to all who helped to make this happen.
